Trying too hard to sail to Hawaii

Catharine Hamm’s feature “Aloha, Ahoy” [On the Spot, June 10] was almost as confusing as the Passenger Vessel Services act, to which the author refers. Although it’s true that Jeanette Jones would have to sail out of either Ensenada, Mexico, or Vancouver, Canada, then have either “20 minutes or three months to spend in Honolulu” before returning on another cruise, this applies only if Jones wants to lay over for a period of time.

There are plenty of round-trip cruises to Hawaii, which sail from either L.A. or San Diego. Their layovers last from a few to more than 24 hours, which would allow Jones to spend at least some time with her grandson.
