Western Airlines Sale OK’d

The Transportation Department gave tentative approval today to the acquisition of Western Airlines by Delta Air Lines, concluding that the merger poses no significant competitive problems.

Delta, the country’s fifth largest airline, announced in September it planned to buy Los Angeles-based Western for $860 million in cash and stock, clearing the way for the air carrier to expand significantly its operations into the West.
