International Paper Co. said earnings for 1988 jumped 85% from the previous year to $754 million. Sales were $9.5 billion, up 22%. The Purchase, N.Y., company credited the figures to impressive results in white papers, market pulp and packaging businesses and noted that its mills operated at or near capacity throughout the year for the second consecutive year.
