Woman Denied Housing Wins $2.4 Million: A U.S. District Court jury has awarded $2.41 million to a woman who said a real estate management firm refused to rent a Washington apartment to her because she has children. The award against William J. Davis Inc. is the largest in the country since federal housing anti-discrimination laws were passed in 1989, according to the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. Carrie J. Timus, 36, a secretary, won the award after five days of testimony in which it was alleged that Davis employees interviewed and evaluated potential renters based on whether they had children.
