A SPECIAL REPORT: BANKING

CLOSING TIME: Security Pacific customers have begun to see changes as Bank of America takes over. But still to come are branch closings and big layoffs, due sometime this fall. . . . There are 48 Security Pacific branches and another 62 Bank of America branches in Orange County, and officials won’t say which ones--or how many--will go. But industry experts predict closures where there are two branches within a quarter-mile of each other. . . . Local bankers predict that they’ll have their pick of laid-off loan officers and that customers will be turned off by the new giant and go elsewhere. “The bottom line is we like the merger,” said J.B. Crowell, president of Eldorado Bank in Tustin.
