Meeting About Freeway Extension Scheduled

Federal highway authorities considering the future of the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension have summoned local officials from affected cities to a meeting in Washington next week, fueling speculation that a decision is imminent on the long-stalled project.
The announcement of the Oct. 3 meeting, which will include officials from Los Angeles, Pasadena, South Pasadena and Alhambra, plus congressional representatives from the area, has local officials wondering whether the Federal Highway Administration is about to approve construction of the contested 6.2-mile extension that would cut through the center of South Pasadena and parts of Pasadena and El Sereno.
But an administration spokesperson declined to say whether a decision, known formally as a Record of Decision, was imminent.
