Bay Area 25-Year Plan Stresses Public Transit

The Bay Area’s transportation planning agency has approved an $87.4-billion, 25-year spending plan that focuses on public transit.
The blueprint--which would take Bay Area Rapid Transit to San Jose and Caltrain into downtown San Francisco, add a fourth bore to the Caldecott Tunnel and give East Bay students free or discounted bus passes--was approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Highway construction interests complained the plan gives too much money to transit, while environmentalists said it doesn’t give enough.
