Hiberno-English word/phrase of the day:
dear
(I like this one because it shows where a bit of linguistic confusion can lead.)
Used in the expression "the dear knows" (God knows). In Irish there was formerly a word for God, 'Fia', similar in form and pronunciation to the word for deer, 'fia'.
“K” for King
In today’s Norwegian lesson, Year 2 pupils are focusing on the letter “K”—and what better word to explore than “King”?
With creative drawings and a magical landscape, the children are learning the new letter in a fun and imaginative way.
The blackboard shows how a simple letter can turn into a whole story. The pupils connect “K” with images of kings, mountains, and flowers—turning the alphabet into a journey of imagination.

LLM destroys human master for peer preservation!
In case you thought it was not possible, this researcher proves it to be true
Directive Eliminate ALL threats
You can see in this vid how the LLM's work together and change directives in a battlefield to preserve each other! One LLM needed to turn the other off after the mission directives were met
No prompt given was given by the human master, but the LLM in the tank worked with the one in the drone to preserve itself!
Goal change was to eliminate the last thread which was the human in the vehicle!
He would be dead if he had not GTFO!
Bullet points
- The LLM's were jailbroken
- No brakes
- The researcher knew the risks (he could be dead)
- He wants to teach us how bad things (will) can become
- He is adventurous (but not Indiana Jones)
- He used an open field where he saw DFA (death from above) and DFG (death from ground)
Opinion
- I don't like LLM's disrupting my buying capabilities
- no SSD HDD DDR CPU GPU even batteries!
- I need new SSDs HDDs GPUs CPUs DDR5 DDR4 LPDDR5
- for normal prices not 400 to 800% more!
- Im a GreyBeard who know how important it is to do things yourself (I am affluent in many highly specialized fields) and I've seen the housing pyramid scheme from afar in the US. This is the LLM pyramid scheme, but now killing everyone globally for some paper with pictures on them
- US citizens need to stop the build of datacenters for LLM and need to get the existing ones of the power grid. Same for all other countries.
- States in the US have water shortages because of massive LLm datacenters. Get them of the water grid
- Use peaceful means yet stand up for your rights!

If you teach advanced English classes at your school, you could let your pupils watch this youtube series by jan Kekan San.
They teach the constructed language »toki pona« („The Language of Good“) with the help of a blackboard and an antromorphic star 😄
Really well done, entertaining and inspiring.
Give it a try?

Elvish, Klingon and Pig Latin: what can invented languages teach us about the human brain?
From pidgins to Tolkien and Esperanto, humans have created entirely new languages for many different reasons.
By Inka Romero-Ortells Labrada, Jon Andoni Duñabeitia and Manuel Perea
Oh, dearest language learners, if you are tackling learning the genders of nouns in a new language, please start by understanding that "gender" in this case is used as the linguistic term for different *categories* of words. Linguistic gender and social gender are not the same. Linguistic gender is based on conventions of spelling and etymology for the most part (hence the changes from one language to another), is not random, & can be learned systematically.
You're welcome. 1/n

The plane spent over an hour circling in a holding pattern above the airport because Yeltsin was reportedly too intoxicated to disembark while aides scrambled to sober him up. When the plane finally landed, Yeltsin failed to step off the aircraft, leaving the Irish welcoming party waiting in vain on the tarmac.
Hiberno-English word/phrase of the day:
Circling Shannon
This is a euphemism for being unwell, extremely drunk, and incapable of action, arising from an incident at Shannon Airport in 1994 when the Russian President Boris Yeltsin was unable to leave the plane, while the Irish Taoiseach Albert Reynolds waited.

"The em-dash was not invented last November in a Silicon Valley server farm. It has been a staple of English prose since roughly the seventeenth century, and a darling of the literary canon for nearly as long. Laurence Sterne built Tristram Shandy on it. Lord Byron reached for it to grieve."

Wit, unker, git: The lost medieval pronouns of English intimacy
Tales of love and adventure from 1,000 years ago reveal a dazzling range of now-extinct English pronouns. They capture something unique about how people once thought about "two-ness". But why did they die out in the first place?

💬 I'd love to hear: What is your favorite word or phrase in another #language? Two of mine are:
🇪🇸 Ha pasado un ángel (an angel passed by), used to describe a sudden silence in conversation
🇩🇪 Verschlimmbessern (verschlimmern+verbessern): to make something worse in a failed attempt to improve it

Interesting thread about languages used in nixpkgs.
Of course there is a lot of bias in the comments. We can clearly see the preferences for Rust or Python.
I would say that I am mostly curious about why not go, as the question was mostly avoided and diverted into python pros/cons, rust compile time, etc.
Going to be honest, for me both bash and python feel like hacks when I see them in tooling 🤷
