SSH-Brute-Force-Attacken laufen auf jedem öffentlichen Server im Dauerbetrieb. Der Großteil der Linux-Server setzt standardmäßig auf Passwörter oder statische SSH-Keys – beides hat bekannte Schwächen.

Passwörter sind durch Credential-Stuffing und GPU-Cluster in Minuten geknackt, statische Keys bleiben unverändert, bis jemand sie manuell rotiert.

Two years ago, the Mac was the awkward special case for Linux builds. Today, my MacBook outbuilds my Linux machines. 🤯

We just got merged a new Linux builder backend into nixpkgs that runs on Apple's Virtualization.framework and exposes Rosetta to the guest VM.

The results on Apple Silicon:

⚡ x86_64-linux builds are 2.5x faster than QEMU emulation
📦 Builder closure shrinks from 3.2 GiB to 1.2 GiB
🚀 VM boots 2x faster
🧪 Nested virtualization: NixOS integration tests with /dev/kvm now run on your Mac (M3+)

And the best part: it's a drop-in replacement. If you use nix-darwin, switching is literally two extra lines in your configuration.

Under the hood is vzvm, a purpose-built VM monitor in ~1000 lines of Swift with zero external dependencies. No bootloader, no disk image juggling, no network configuration. It does exactly what a Nix remote builder needs — and nothing else.

The fun part of the story: building x86_64 NixOS systems and deploying them remotely is now faster from my Mac than from my aarch64 Linux machines, because Rosetta beats QEMU's software emulation hands down.

Das kleine Tool hält auf zwei unabhängigen Proxmox Mail Gateways die persönlichen Welcome-/Blocklisten aus den Quarantäne-Digests synchron. So wirkt die Entscheidung eines Empfängers unabhängig davon, über welchen gleichpriorisierten MX die nächste Mail ankommt.

Der Ansatz ist bewusst restriktiv:

- Peer-Daten nur lesend über die PMG-API mit Auditor-Rolle
- Änderungen ausschließlich lokal über pmgsh
- add-only: keine automatischen Löschungen, kein Datenverlust
- kein PMG-Cluster, kein pmgcm, kein SSH zwischen den Gateways
- Dry-run als sicherer Standard, systemd-Timer optional

Nicht synchronisiert werden Filterregeln, Transports, TLS-Policies, Spam-Scores oder Quarantäne-Inhalte. Das sind bewusst getrennte Themen mit anderen Risiken.

An ex-Azure engineer published six essays arguing Microsoft's cloud has been on life support since 2008, and the cause isn't bad code. It's bad people decisions. Rushed launch, post-launch talent exodus, no testing discipline, no architectural vision. Sound familiar to anyone who's worked in a place that ships first and staffs later?

Now layer 2026 on top. Microsoft cut roughly 15,000 jobs in mid-2025. Coding agents are pumping out 4x more commits in 90 days. GitHub's unofficial uptime has slipped under 90% and the proposed fix is, wait for it, moving more of GitHub onto Azure. The same Azure the engineer says is held together with rushed decisions and wishful thinking.

🧠 The phrase that stuck with me is "knowledge dilution from high attrition." When the senior people who knew why a system was built that way leave, no LLM in the world can recover that context
🤖 More AI-written code does not mean less work. It means more code to review, test, deploy, and run, which means more compute and more humans needed downstream
📉 OpenAI signing an $11.9B compute deal with CoreWeave in March 2025 was the loudest "we don't trust your capacity" signal Microsoft has ever received from its closest partner

So you created your favorite product system image, minimized it, tested its systemd-sysupdate over-the-air update capabilities, your CI automatically tests it in sandboxed virtual networks, and you are happy with it. Now your carefully engineered product wants to be deployed to a smaller embedded system without hassle? Maybe even from your Mac?

The final piece of the NixOS appliance image blog post series puzzle is here, and we are tackling one of the nastiest challenges in embedded systems and make it look easy: Cross-Compilation.

We started with the basics and progressively added advanced capabilities:
