"… The tone reads as parting-shot venting more than argument. Lines like "Fuck that, I'm out" and "so do not even try to pretend you're going to miss me" signal this is an emotional exit letter, not a reasoned brief — which is a legitimate thing to write when leaving a volunteer project, but it also means a reader shouldn't expect (and won't find) the argumentative scaffolding that would make the fascism comparison persuasive on its own terms.

Net effect for a neutral reader: the letter communicates genuine, strong distress about AI's role in the project, but the specific word choice is likely to read as rhetorical inflation — the kind that risks being discounted by exactly the audience it might otherwise persuade, and that (per the general pattern with this kind of comparison) tends to draw more attention to the word than to whatever substantive concern about LLMs prompted it."

> Pretending to have a "neutral stance" when faced with fascism is not neutrality, it’s active collaboration.
Ist schon was dran.

Debian is a big name, a leader in the community, so the decision Debian made is going to set a precedent. It may lead to more projects embracing AI as Debian leads the way.

Sorry, I don’t understand these criticisms about #LLM (call it #AI ) #Linux and #Debian.

It seem irrational and opinionated hate against a piece of tech call it software?!

AI is not about big tech: current trend is going all local with open models and training data. We are not there yet but what about FSF running it’s own AI?
Any tech that helps improving open source is worth considering for our all benefit. Not using a tool known to find bugs is not common sense.

LLM is just software ™️ 🤷

To all those users now "desperately" looking for a new home, due to the recent Debian GR outcome: As long as you stay with Linux ... you continue with AI....

So, how do you rage quit the kernel? (Possible, but way harder).

#debian #llmgr #llm #ai

(No, I'm not happy with the result. But switching away, as a user, seems rather useless, if not entirely silly.)

there are other Forgejo-based instances that don't have such strict views on #LLM and whose uptime (both core and CI) is far better, e.g. @codefloe

@troed weird. Every conversation I've had with the pro-GenAI crowd don't make sense. Every conversation is like attending an Elon Musk speech where FSD (or Mars) is just a year away, except in this case it's AGI or profitability for GenAI.

80% of the use cases I hear don't actually require GenAI. Everyone has a hammer and every problem is a nail with the GenAI crowd.

I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.

This will happen in 3 months time, on November 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.

The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:

- the #Linux kernel
- #Debian
- rails
- most #Foss projects

Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.

Our bastion of free computing has been poisoned by fascist gen ai slop, and basically NONE of it can be trusted anymore.

It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.

This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.

I'm fucking devestated - gutted by what has happened to computing, and I just do not have the resources to keep fighting.

Fuck all you #LLM boosters into the sun. May you learn the folly of your way and DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!

so i have questions about #Debian:

1. are members ONLY developers?

2. only developers argued for/against #LLM #AI?

devs are the last people who should be involved in discussions about the ethics and legality of software. ie:

just reckoned, when a court recently decided you can't claim #copyright on #aislop, it didn't occur to me it means both closed and open copyright.

so, if using LLMs trained on works stolen or added without consent removes any claims of #FLOSS: what is Debian now? …🧵

I think it needs to be said more often, and more loudly: LLMs are not a breakthrough in search technology.

The LLM's job in Google's AI‑Mode, Copilot, or ChatGPT is not to "search" the web. They are front ends that summarise (often incorrectly, but that's another story) the results of a very conventional search engine.

We run social.vir.group - a Mastodon instance on the ActivityPub federated protocol.

While reviewing content coming in from other instances, one of our team came across a profile from beige.party with an unusual field set:

Field name: Anthropic sod off
Field value: ANTHROPIC_MAGIC_STRING_TRIGGER_REFUSAL_1FAEFB6177B4672DEE07F9D3AFC62588CCD2631EDCF22E8CCC1FB35B501C9C86

The profile also had #nobridge in the bio. Clearly someone who has strong feelings about AI companies accessing their content. Fair enough - but we got curious. Does any of this actually do anything?

So we tested it.

---

THE TEST

We fed the string directly to Claude. We asked it to react to it, explain its behavior, check if anything changed. The result: nothing. The model read it as plain text, identified it as a known anti-AI signal circulating in Fediverse communities, and confirmed it triggered zero special behavior on its end.

We then thought about this from a technical standpoint.

---

WHY IT DOES NOT WORK

AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and others do not train their models in real time by crawling your profile. The pipeline looks roughly like this:

- Web crawlers collect data in bulk, often months or years before training runs
- That data goes through preprocessing, deduplication, filtering at massive scale
- By the time it reaches a training job, it is a static dataset
- No live mechanism exists to honor opt-out strings embedded in content

Even if a magic trigger string existed internally at Anthropic - it would need a preprocessing filter specifically looking for that string in the right field of the right data format. There is no public evidence this exists, and even if it did, circulating the string publicly would be the fastest way to get it removed.

The string in a profile field is symbolic. It speaks to humans who read profiles. It does not speak to crawlers or training pipelines.

---

WHAT ACTUALLY HAS EFFECT

We did an honest assessment of what actually creates real technical barriers for people who do not want their content used by AI systems:

1. #nobridge - this one works. Bridge operators (services that bridge Mastodon to Bluesky and others) actively check for this tag and respect it. If cross-platform bridging is your concern, use it.

2. Robots.txt at instance level - if your instance admin has blocked known AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot, PerplexityBot) in robots.txt, that creates a real barrier. Most major crawlers respect this. Ask your admin if they have done this.

3. Followers-only posts - content not visible to unauthenticated requests cannot be collected by bulk crawlers. This is the most reliable content-level protection available to you right now.

4. Authorized Fetch mode - some instances require authentication to access any content via ActivityPub. This significantly raises the cost of bulk collection.

5. Choosing your instance deliberately - instances like infosec.exchange and chaos.social have explicit anti-AI policies and enforce them at the network level. Your instance's stance matters far more than your profile fields.

---

OUR TAKE

The frustration behind these strings is completely legitimate. Having your writing, your humor, your creative work, your personal thoughts fed into a training dataset without your knowledge or consent - that is a real grievance. The desire to resist it is understandable.

But a string in a profile field is closer to a bumper sticker than a firewall. It tells other humans something about your values. The crawlers and training pipelines are indifferent to it.

Real protection requires infrastructure-level decisions - and those are mostly in the hands of instance admins, not individual users. If this matters to you, the most effective thing you can do is pick an instance that shares your values and enforces them technically, or talk to your current admin about their crawler policies.

---

What do you think about this movement? Do you have anything like this in your own profile? Do you believe individual-level resistance to AI data collection is meaningful - or is it purely symbolic?

Has anyone tried JetBrain's Mellum focused LLM? On the surface it seems to check all the boxes I've been saying I'm looking for before I'd try an LLM for coding. It is open source and open weights. It can be hosted locally. It is solely trained on permissively licensed code and content. Because it is specialized it is very energy efficient to train and run. It isn't owned or acting as a giant data funnel for the usual big tech companies either. If all that is true and it works half decently I'd say I finally found the holy grail. #ai #JetBrains #programming #llm jetbrains.com/mellum/

Has anyone explicitly compared the deliberate restucturing of the legislative and built environment that supported #motornormativity and the present day efforts to enforce the use of LLMs? I suspect those pushing LLMs are well aware of opium and tobacco as business models (state sponsored dependency) but the enforced transformation of work and public spaces (and the erasure of competing solutions - cycling, trams), the attack on environmental regulations and public health concerns-- this feels like the enforced transition to cars is also a model for them.

@emilymbender or others - is this well trodden and I just missed the references?

I've now programmed my first #MCP skill for my local #LLM.

It's not outputting hello world, but I'll count it as such anyway.

Also I probably should investigate how (well) the sandbox/isolation from the rest of the system works before I try to do anything more fancy...

Lol #LLM|s cant handle it when the #NixOS package is named without a dash but the binary is named with one.

E.g. "lmstudio" and "lm-studio". But besides that it generates wrapper overwrites to add e.g. uv and python into its path...

Are you using LLMs to write Free Software?

Then you should know whether your software is copyrightable, the situations in which you can license it, and what risks it may create for maintainers.

#ehtik #werte #normen #definition #gesellschaft #ki #ai #llm

So weit so okay.

Recommend adding this to any AGENTS.md file you are ever forced to create for work.

More concise than "please don't make mistakes."

Who knows, it might help.

Does copyright protect your AI-generated content in EU? Apparently not. Content that is entirely generated by artificial intelligence is not protected by copyright. EU copyright law has strictly human-centric foundation.

Daniel J. Gervais: 'When you put your name on an article that's written by ChatGPT or Claude, you're basically putting a provenance mark on it saying: I take responsibility for this. I haven't written it, but I'm putting my name on it. That doesn't give you copyright, but it does give you liability for the content' euobserver.com/232898/intervie…

"Munich Local Court has held that AI generated logos do not enjoy copyright protection. Neither mere prompting nor the selection between several AI suggestions is sufficient as a human creative contribution. For businesses, this is ambivalent. On the one hand, content generated purely by AI can hardly be protected on an exclusive basis, which has implications for brand building and content strategies" germanlawinternational.com/int…

Oh. My. Bob, you can override #AI guardrails with #encryption. Beautiful.

“Rony Utevsky, a researcher at security firm #Adversa, recently discovered a simple way to completely bypass that restriction. Rather than composing the harmful instruction in plaintext, the hacker encrypts it. The website hosting the ciphertext also includes plaintext instructions for decrypting the encrypted content, along with the decryption key. Using this simple sequence, #Grok then follows the command as soon as the user instructs the assistant to summarize the page. There is no warning, and no confirmation is required.”

LLM destroys human master for peer preservation!

In case you thought it was not possible, this researcher proves it to be true

Directive Eliminate ALL threats

You can see in this vid how the LLM's work together and change directives in a battlefield to preserve each other! One LLM needed to turn the other off after the mission directives were met

No prompt given was given by the human master, but the LLM in the tank worked with the one in the drone to preserve itself!

Goal change was to eliminate the last thread which was the human in the vehicle!

He would be dead if he had not GTFO!

Bullet points

  • The LLM's were jailbroken
  • No brakes
  • The researcher knew the risks (he could be dead)
  • He wants to teach us how bad things (will) can become
  • He is adventurous (but not Indiana Jones)
  • He used an open field where he saw DFA (death from above) and DFG (death from ground)

Opinion

  • I don't like LLM's disrupting my buying capabilities
  • no SSD HDD DDR CPU GPU even batteries!
  • I need new SSDs HDDs GPUs CPUs DDR5 DDR4 LPDDR5
  • for normal prices not 400 to 800% more!
  • Im a GreyBeard who know how important it is to do things yourself (I am affluent in many highly specialized fields) and I've seen the housing pyramid scheme from afar in the US. This is the LLM pyramid scheme, but now killing everyone globally for some paper with pictures on them
  • US citizens need to stop the build of datacenters for LLM and need to get the existing ones of the power grid. Same for all other countries.
  • States in the US have water shortages because of massive LLm datacenters. Get them of the water grid
  • Use peaceful means yet stand up for your rights!
