#Anthropology hivemind: what should I read (review paper or at least semischolarly book) to get a good picture of the history of our understanding of human/hominin evolution? Not so much what we now know about human evolution, but about the people and discoveries that got us there.

After conversations or meetings that I want to document and reflect on I am often too tired to make notes that are more than bullet points. I found out that *talking* about it (even to myself) works fine. So I started to record my thoughts as audio, put it through a transcription program (noscribe, which runs locally) and edit it later to make it more easy to read and add some context.

#Anthropology shows that societies collapse when leaders undermine social contracts

“Societies with good governance tend to last a bit longer than autocratic govt that keep power concentrated to one person or a small group.

But the flip side is that when a "good" govt collapses, things tend to be harder for the citizens, because they'd come to rely on the infrastructure of that govt in their day-to-day life.”

It seems that a fair amount of #ceramics found at five archaeological sites in #Czechia from the Upper #Paleolithic were formed by children. A really interesting article that also explains how they arrived at their conclusions about kid ceramicists.

As chilling as it is informative: In a paper published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, an international cohort of researchers revealed that the children — sacrificial victims killed between 500 and 900 A.D. — were all local Maya boys that may have been specifically selected to be killed in sibling pairs. nytimes.com/2024/06/12/science… #anthropology #genome #archaeology #archaeogenetics
