#Google is going to close down #Android platform, making installing "unverified" apps almost impossible for a regular user. This would completely kill #FDroid, something I rely on to get apps that don't track me, don't show me ads and don't try to exploit me.

If you care about #FreeSoftware, you should care about this. Maybe with enough public uproar, Google like many other corporations before it will back off from this plan. But it certainly won't happen on it's own.

Is it also making you upset 😡 that the majority of laptops 💻 are only sold with a specific proprietary operating system: Microsoft Windows.
So as user, you must pay for it 💲, even if you do not want to use this OS.

This is unfair and we want to change it! Consumers should be able to buy laptops without any specific OS, and should not have to pay the license price if they don't want to.

While I indeed do appreciate the effort and agree with your suggestions, I feel like mentioning the #Fediverse as a whole instead of merely #Mastodon's implementation would be more true to the mission of our project.

Additionally, the proposition of a “random server” may not be as simple as you may initially assume. I feel like if they somehow end up in a server with policies they dislike, this may risk the possible inverse effect of people being even more put-off by the Fediverse due to a bad first impression.

Finally, due to the demographics of Facebook users being on the more older side, I'd like to posit that perhaps a comparison to the #Usenet #newsgroups of old would help make the explanation more pedagogically accessible. Cheers!

@severin if the software allows for all four freedoms (see fsfe.org/freesoftware/freesoft…), it is #FreeSoftware . Public Domain and CC-0 does. Software in this state is fully #FreeSoftware by the FSF's (and FSFE's) criteria.

This is why they are listed as "green" at the FSF's licenses list:

However be aware of the caveats:
* Some countries do not allow something to be placed into public domain actively.
* patents can degrade the four freedoms in practice
* Freedom of the software is not protected.

If you want to a piece of software to be #FreeSoftware without protection of freedom, the Apache-2.0 license is generally recommended.

GrapheneOS: Google replaced pushing Git tags for certain source code with obtaining source code via Google Drive after making a request through Google Forms. It's completely ridiculous and they've gradually become very slow at handling requests. They're in clear violation of the GPLv2 now.
