"A town becomes AI for a day in a bid to save its water.
An initiative by FUNDACIÓN AVINA and CORPORACIÓN NGEN.
[The Problem]
Quilicura, Chile sits within the Maipo river basin, one of the main sources of water for people and farming. Since the early 2010s, Quilicura has become a major hub for A.I data centers that use large amounts of water to cool down servers. Because of that, coupled with an ongoing climate crisis, Chile is facing a severe drought expected to last until 2040.
[Becoming AI for a Day]
Even though A.I. can move mankind ahead, the irresponsible use of A.I. can have disastrous effects on our water and other resources. It is inconceivable to think that someone casually using A.I. to create funny images in NYC or Berlin, can affect the water supply in Quilicura, Chile.
To make the impact visible, and to help draw visibility to the problem, the residents from Quilicura became “human A.I.,” for a day. Answering prompts, creating content with local artists, and completing other tasks manually.
Humans helping to answer prompts
The initiative helped dimensionalize a complex problem, and helped show the world the real people affected by the the irresponsible use of A.I. and the hidden cost it has on local water resources.
[THE IMPACT]

On JAN 31st from 8 AM to 8 PM: more than 40 people from Quilicura managed to answer more than 25,000 prompts.

Chatting with more than 68 countries around the world that supported the project.

🌊 Flash flooding swamped Brooklyn Thursday night
NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning for Brooklyn & Manhattan from 5:40-7:45pm. Streets flooded, water poured into homes and businesses, and the BQE was shut down in parts.
Gov. Hochul declared a state of emergency for the NYC area as the storms rolled through.

🌪️ Severe storms slammed the NYC area Thursday night — flash flooding, over 2 inches of rain, and TWO tornadoes that started as waterspouts off Queens and Long Island.
One came ashore in the Eastern Rockaways, the other in Atlantic Beach, between 6:30-7pm. LaGuardia briefly shut down; 200+ flights canceled.
No injuries reported, but damage hit homes and businesses along the coast.

New York Fediverse Meetup Friday 14 Aug 2026 7PM
Mallory and I (Evan) will both be at HOPE in New York tomorrow. Mallory is giving a talk on I-Stars: Protocols and Power on the main stage which looks awesome. I’ll be holding a workshop to help people Get on the Fediverse Already – setting up their Fediverse accounts for the first time. Since we’re both there, we want to have a meetup with the wider Fediverse community in New York!
So, we’re organizing a Fediverse Meetup at the Irish Exit inside the Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station at 7PM. HOPE is just a block away at the New Yorker Hotel, so we think this is a good location. And who doesn’t love Penn Station?
We’ll grab a biggish table and put up a sign — you should be able to find us pretty easily. All Fediverse denizens and lovers of the Open Social Web are welcome. We will be around for a couple of hours at least — if you have a favourite evening talk at HOPE you don’t want to miss, please feel free to stop by. I'll go farther than that: the PIT Crews – and Mamdani's project as a whole – is delivering the entire failed promise of DOGE. Unlike Musk and Trump, Mamdani is actually rooting out fraud and waste. Long Island City #LIRR Terminal in Queens is, arguably, the quietest of all #NYC 🇺🇸 rail termini. Only a few peak-time services originate, or terminate, here. I had to ask a local where the access was, after having passed the entrance several times, without noticing. A nice and surprisingly quiet place.

On #Amtrak’s 🇺🇸 “Silver Meteor” from #Miami, FL, to #NYC. Miami’s Amtrak station is a modest affair, and far away from the city centre.
Our train is hauled by three diesels, two Siemens Chargers and one GE Genesis. (Not sure they’re all fired up.) The train includes #Amfleet and #Viewliner cars.
