Man dies following bodysurfing incident at Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach

A 41-year-old man died Wednesday evening, following an incident while bodysurfing at South Crescent Bay that same day in Laguna Beach, officials said.

Marine safety staff pulled the unconscious man from the surfline at about 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the city of Laguna Beach. He was said to have gone into cardiac arrest after lifeguards responded to bring him to shore.

Fire department and marine safety personnel performed CPR, before transporting the individual to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach via an ambulance.

Authorities confirmed the individual’s death on Thursday. The identity of the decedent was being withheld until next of kin could be notified, an Orange County Coroner’s Office spokesperson said.

Marine safety officials have warned of dangerous ocean conditions, including high surf and rip currents, at different points throughout the summer.

“Our beaches in Laguna are beautiful, but they can be very, very dangerous,” Marine Safety Capt. Dane Doran told ABC7 on Thursday. “Steps that people can take to stay safe are checking their local reports and talking to the lifeguard when they get to the beach.

“But again, aside from our safety message, our thoughts today and our focus is with the friends and family of yesterday’s victim.”

In June, a 5-year-old girl from San Bernardino drowned after being swept into the ocean near Treasure Island beach. Ocean search and rescue efforts spanned more than 24 hours, before her body was recovered during an aerial survey of the coastline.
