The panel nailed the eventual nominees with its top seven picks in Round 1, but considers this one of the closest races in Round 2. Only 2 points separate the Top 2 (Tom Pelphrey and Patrick Ball), and the next three (Shawn Hatosy, Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Gerran Howell) are within 7 points of each other. With three of those five from the same show (“The Pitt”), vote-splitting is a strong possibility.
“This is one race without a definitive frontrunner for me,” says Tracy Brown, who picks Ball while admitting “my favorite [among the ‘Pitt’ nominees] is Gerran Howell’s young Dr. Dennis Whitaker.”
“At the Alternate Emmys, where only things I love win, Carlos-Manuel Vesga receives this,” says Lorraine Ali. She praises the actor’s ability to communicate so much with so little dialogue, calling him “a master of the understated.”
But it’s Pelphrey who gets the most support from the panel. Glenn Whipp calls him “brilliant as the desperate single dad in ‘Task.’” Kristen Baldwin writes, “Here’s hoping ‘The Pitt’ avalanche doesn’t overshadow Tom Pelphrey’s beautiful, bittersweet turn.”
“Tom Pelphrey’s powerful turn … feels far removed from where we are in the season now,” says Trey Mangum. “But it was so great that, combined with [a possible ‘Pitt’ split], I’m confident Pelphrey will prevail.”
