🌊 The fascinating world of marine plants

The underwater world is a magical place—full of colours, shapes, and life. In their botany lessons, Year 6 pupils have been exploring the topic of seaweed.
They’ve discovered red algae, sea lettuce, bladderwrack, and kelp, learning about their unique forms and functions.

Seaweed also plays a vital role in the ecosystem: it produces oxygen, serves as food and shelter for marine animals, and contributes to the health of the oceans.

Many types of seaweed, such as sea lettuce, are edible and used in cooking as a nutritious ingredient. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and iodine, they’re a true superfood treasure from the sea!

🐛 If something is eating your plants, you may be doing something right!

Holes in leaves aren't always failure. They can mean your garden is feeding the food web. Caterpillars, birds, fungi and insects all play a role in a living ecosystem.

🌿 Signs of life: • Chewed leaves • Birds hunting • Flowers going to seed • Fungi breaking down fallen material • Insects sheltering in stems

Don’t ask, “Does my garden look perfect?” Ask: “Who is using it?”

Seed dispersal plays a key role in facilitating important ecological processes that reduce plant competition, parasitism and predation while promoting gene flow and #biodiversity. In many ecosystems across North America and Eurasia, wolves consume fruits when available. However, the impact of #wolf consumption on seeds, particularly germination success and speed, remains unknown.

Discovering Flowers in SFO

In After-School Care, the children have collected and pressed flowers together. Using a traditional wooden flower press with screws, the delicate petals and leaves are gently dried—creating lasting works of natural art.

Through flower pressing, children discover the intricate beauty of plants in a hands-on way. The children learn to identify plants, collect them mindfully, and experience the beauty of nature in new forms.

The pressed flowers can later be used for pictures, greeting cards, or herbariums—a lasting reminder of nature and the time spent together in SFO.

As nations race to restore ecosystems and curb #climate change, research has shown that letting #nature do the work is a cost-effective, viable solution.

Scientists found that natural #forest regeneration delivered substantial carbon and #biodiversity benefits and could be up to 96% cheaper than traditional tree-planting programs.

Forests are Earth's #life-support systems, and tropical forests are the most biodiverse among all forest types, covering 18% of the land and home to more than half of all land vertebrate #species.

They are also a giant carbon sink, so when deforestation happens, we not only stop the forest from taking up carbon, but we also flip it and turn it into a carbon source.

🌱 Protect the soil. Protect our future.

Every meal we eat begins with living soil. Fungi, bacteria, plants and countless organisms built the foundation for forests, farming and human life.

Today, soil is being degraded faster than it can recover. Let’s protect soil biodiversity, support sustainable farming and restore the living ground beneath our feet. 🌍🌳

Michler led a decade-long research project in Müritz National Park, the largest and longest European field study of its kind. She concluded that there is no evidence of a significant threat to Germany's native #biodiversity. Some environmentalists have even claimed that the ecological data we have does not support the EU's designation of #raccoon s as an invasive species.

Defend the defenders

Our planet’s vital defenses against #ClimateChange & #biodiversity loss are being stripped away in real-time. We see it in the smoke-filled forests of the Amazon in Brazil, the bleaching reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia

  • This is not a distant threat: it is the defining emergency of our present moment.

We demand world leaders move beyond empty promises and immediately recognise the legal territories and rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Together we can build a way of life where nature and people thrive together.

Nile crocodiles have the strongest bite of any living animal, a rare four-chambered heart, and surprisingly gentle parenting skills. These massive reptiles can grow up to 5 meters long and weigh up to 1,000 kg.

Big ones here! Last year a fisherman fell in the Komatjiepoort river, gone in a flash!

Treasure trove of data: #EuroWorm project!

Species are disappearing at an alarming rate worldwide. Many creatures are threatened with extinction before they have even been identified. To advance the discovery of new species and understanding of global #BioDiversity, researchers are building a comprehensive dataset on European marine worms, accessible for international research: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html…

Congratulations to researchers led by #LeibnizInstitute #BiodiversityChangeAnalysis - with our Uni & #Senckenberg on #LeibnizAssociation funding.
