I got invited to talk about #meshcore (and possible #meshtastic ) to the local Radio Amateur Club.
Sure, I will bring some devices and talk about how the network looks like here in Sweden today and also usecases.
But what more can or should I cover here?
That webpage shows this text : "This isn’t a conference. It’s a convening of the obsessed — the ones 👉who rice Linux for fun👈, who have opinions about init systems, who believe the developer experience is about more than just making it work."
I remember that people on the Fediverse were telling other people to not use the words "rice" or "ricing" when showing their Linux desktop screenshots but I forgot why.
I guess this is it ?

Anyone here in the fediverse have an idea what this tool is used for? It was found in a tool kit with recognizable metal clamps of various styles, gappers, radius gauges ?) metal files, pliers, and 4” metal rulers.
I’m intrigued by its range of numbers & precision clamping capability and wondering why one would need to fine tune a clamp.
Hey, folks! Do you, or someone you know, use or run some kind of professional organization? Something with membership, dues, invoices, events, that sort of thing?
How do you do it? What do you use?
I'm on the board of an organization, and we're shelling out nearly $1,000 monthly for "website development". It's just a subscription, though, it's not like we're getting $1,000 worth of work hours out of someone. We're definitely not getting $12k of value…
I've been having knee issues since the beginning of the year. PT for any part of my body doesn't work for me; it makes it much worse. I've done two types of knee injections, which actually made the pain worse and significantly reduced my mobility. I thought there were still more conservative options remaining, but apparently the next stage is meeting with a surgeon for knee replacement.
Do I understand correctly there is a long recovery time? If you know someone who did a knee replacement, did it go well and do you recommend it for others?
Danke.
Is it crazy to say modern KDE feels snappier than GNOME these days, or am I just trying to start a fight on the timeline?
How are we feeling about desktop weight right now?

- KDE Plasma (faster than people admit) (0 votes)
- Standalone WMs (config files FTW) (0 votes)
It feels like the old "GNOME is lean, KDE is bloated" argument started flipping once Qt 6 and modern Wayland compositors matured.
When you evaluate resource management and architecture today, where do you stand?

Anybody know anything about this, beyond that it’s Polynesian? I’m drawn to it; the figures are familiar but I can’t place them. It was a gift from one of my acupuncturist’s patients, but he never found out anything further.
FIRST EDIT: In light of new information, changed “African” to “Polynesian.” Would like to learn about what it means as well as where it’s from.
SECOND EDIT: Added more hashtags, as suggested.

My sister in law is starting a new business and is throwing shit in ChatGPT thinking it looks good. I hate it.
To artists: how much would you charge to make a simple non-vomit induced logo?
Please DM me. I want to know the real worth of your time and talent. Not throw a bid with a race to the bottom.
Boost please!

I, dear #AskFedi, have been reading boingboing dot net as one of my daily nerd culture RSS feed sources, since back in the day when Cory Doctorow and Xeni Jardin were the main writers. I’m dismayed at their advertising of AI tools, and generally their slide into advertising any schlock that pays. I feel the old BB wouldn’t have done that; my old friend is dead. I’m gonna demote adafruit too, same reason. My other daily must reads are Ars Technica, CNX embedded news, reacTOR.com, linux gizmos, make magazine, xkcd and QC.
Who would you add to fill the tech/culture vacancy?
(I subscribe to many other rss feeds, but those are the ones in my morning news ritual, which inspires my daily microfic)
I'm looking for a term or phrase that describes the always advancing encroachment of for-profit 'data-analytics' (aka surveillance) companies on the scientific community.
I'm thinking about "surveillance publishing" (Elsevier being the prime example), but also the business models of Clarivate and platforms like academia.edu & ResearchGate:
Where researchers communicate, what tools they use, etc
@RenkeSiems suggested "Data Cartels" by Sarah Lamdan: sup.org/books/law/data-cartels

Chat, can you recommend to me thoughtful, well-researched books about #GamerGate ? Maybe published a little after it happened so that the author has a chance to summarise and reflect?
Note - my sympathies are with the women & other victims, I do not need to need to read about how the perpetrators still believe their behaviour was justified. I can simply open Steam comments for that POV, tyvm!
Boosts welcome #AskFedi
Ideen? Vorschläge?

Is there any good way to find relay servers on the Fediverse? Specifically so I can subscribe to remote posts about a specific hashtag or group of hashtags to federate on my server?
I know I tried finding some a while ago but the way they were handled with sign-ups and requests were a bit strange to me so I gave up.

So, I have a situation where a much older person in my family keeps clicking on YouTube ads and things like that on their Android phone, turning it into an adware riddled landmine within hours of use.
Is there an easy way to block all ads for them? Switching to using a browser and adding adblock there is not an option, they have a very hard time remembering new ways to do things these days.
I'm finding old articles that say AdGuard VPN can act like a sort of PiHole situation for an individual phone, but I'd like to hear from people who've actually done this and kept it up (and aren't paid ads for AdGuard VPN).
Please boost if you can!
Edit: talking through some solutions it's become clear that an additional problem that will have to be resolved to make any of this long-term maintainable is solving the random clicking issue, since it also results in uninstalling things, disabling things, etc. and would jeopardise any phone-base solutions. If anyone has any experience with that, I would appreciate it if you could share!
Is there a good open source way to replace the timeline feature in Google maps with something self hosted?

Are there services for something like “temporary” free hosting? I need around 1GB of web space on which to host the website for a domain I've recently recovered (long story) until I can migrate to a more sensible registrar that is (1) cheaper and (2) offers said modicum of space included in the price, but I cannot migrate said domains for another two months approximately.
(I would self-host, but at the moment I can't for reasons)

#Duolingo used to be so good for #LanguageLearning. Is there an alternative I can use to play games and learn languages?

@lug_nuernberg #askFedi #Fedihelp Wer weiß Rat?

EDIT: Task has been tasked out. I enjoyed looking at everyone’s portfolios here on Fedi, we’ve got some great talent!
Hey y'all. I have some VERY minor graphic design work (logo cleanup) I need done, and I just don't have the will to do it myself.
What's a reputable site I can use (like TaskRabbit but for graphic design?) to ask for assistance.
This is for a very liberal, LGBTQIA+ friendly church in my hometown.
Smart people of fedi, can you help me figure out one weird problem?
I have a paid VPN subscription and noticed that it doesn't work in one of the wifi networks I use from time to time. They offer #OpenVPN as a protocol, and this is the one I always use.
The interesting thing is that the OpenVPN client in my computer does log in and authenticates correctly. Watching the logs, I'm able to confirm that the client exchanges keys and authenticates correctly until the "Initialization sequence complete" message. But beyond this point, no HTTP traffic seem to go through.
Ping works flawlessly, and so does DNS as I'm able to resolve names without problem. SSH, however, doesn't. Could it perhaps be something about the TCP being blocked? I'm ruling out the blocking specific ports here because, as the VPN connection is indeed completed, I assume that all traffic "seen" by the network provider is already encapsulated at that stage. Right?
I'd love to leverage #askfedi for a bit here, because this is thing is really frustrating. Thank you, beautiful Fedi!
