For: #selfhosting and/or #Fediverse power users

I've tested and tweaked #Nicolium, a front end for Pleroma and other Fediverse back ends. With the tweaks in place, it works well for me. I'll share some of them in patch form at a later date.

Features include hashtag follow, emoji reactions, borders on focused posts, Markdown, WYSIWYG editor, real-time chat, draft posts, URL cleaning, direct messages, enhanced interaction policies, theme editor with export support, image ALT-text button, profile avatars inline next to mentions, and different ways to handle load or display of new posts.

There is also a multi-column Deck feature, but that is more of a work in progress.

The attached screenshot shows what my tweaked Nicolium presently looks like. The panel at the top is one of the tweaks. I added it to hold link buttons for different purposes.

To see a larger copy, in Chromium or Firefox derivatives, left-click on the image. To see a full-size copy, right-click on the image, select Open in New Window, and resize the new window.

Trick for advanced users:

The screenshot shows a /tags/ URL in the location bar. FYI The combination of Pleroma [as back end] and Soapbox or Nicolium [as front end] displays URLs of this type in response to hashtag operations, but the URLs don't work if you reuse them.

If you encounter this issue, URLs of this type can be made to work by adding the following location block before other location blocks in your "nginx" or "angie" server ".conf" file:

If #MarkCarney knew the US was negotiating in bad faith, he certainly didn't show it by understanding the necessity of urgently developing Canadian #digitalSovereignty. Someone please sit him down in front of a @pluralistic talk (as Doctorow's a Canadian source, and Carney appears to trust journalists well enough to appoint them Ministers: though urgently read also the books by the experts cited below), and persuade our PM that our #sovereignty and #nationalSecurity depend on freeing #Canada from all Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), and Amazon (AWS) dependence, with wartime urgency.

Hon. @Paulatics, @KristopherWells, @SenKarenAb, or @colindeacon: Can any of you talk some sense into our Honourable bank executive about this? I'd be happy to volunteer to explain anything in Cory's presentations or books that you or Mark doesn't understand. (I have over 20 years' paid experience explaining tech stuff to non-tech people, if that'd be useful.) I'm sure plenty other Canadians such as those in the @linuxassociation and the Canadian #selfHosting community could help explain this too.

Perhaps this needs to be more diplomatically phrased, but if we need funds to accelerate Canadian digital sovereignty, I suggest taking them from Evan Solomon's tax-abyss Ministry of Slop. Evan's an uncritical career tech hype-man with less qualification to run a technology ministry than the historically and catastrophically incompetent #PeteHegseth has to run the US DoD. Solomon's education is in English literature and religious studies, not anything even remotely related to computing, and it shows. His religious fanaticism for, as Drs. @emilymbender and @alex aptly put it, The AI Con, ought to disqualify him from leading a tech ministry.

Meanwhile, the very existence of such an office as "Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation" shows that our illustrious economist mistakenly believes that, in the Empire of AI (per Karen Hao), Canada can become a colonizer, not return to its prior status as a colony: exactly as Trump and the coterie of technofeudal "AI" CEOs backing him are seeking to coerce us into becoming. The promises of "economic efficiency" (i.e., mass layoffs, wage deflation, and metastatic rent extraction) promised by the #TESCREAL (@timnitGebru) dogma of the AI cult system may resound with confirmation bias in the heart of the true believer in the religion of neoclassical economics (may the Earth become infinite and Homo economicus cease requiring infinite compute power), but alas, our first priority in tech policy should not be proliferation of climate- and community-destroying hyperscale #datacentres for the Slop God, but instead, in removing Trump's ability to do to all #Canadian government and business what Donald did the the #ICC with a few sanctions.

Wenn von einer Cloud die Rede ist, denken viele zuerst an große kommerzielle Anbieter und daran, die eigenen Dateien irgendwo bei einem Drittanbieter abzulegen.

Doch Cloud muss nicht automatisch Drittanbieter bedeuten. Genau das zeigt Hubzilla sehr schön. 🌐

Hubzilla ist nämlich weit mehr als eine Plattform zum Veröffentlichen von Beiträgen und zur Vernetzung im Fediverse. Zu seinen besonderen Möglichkeiten gehört auch eine integrierte Cloud, in der Dateien und Ordner abgelegt, organisiert und mit anderen geteilt werden können.

Und wie so oft bei Hubzilla wird es besonders interessant, wenn die Berechtigungen ins Spiel kommen:
Wer darf eine Datei sehen? Mit wem möchte ich einen Ordner teilen? Was bleibt privat? Und welche Möglichkeiten bietet mir Hubzilla darüber hinaus?

Genau darum geht es beim 11. Hubzilla-Workshop:

☁️ Wie funktioniert die Cloud in Hubzilla?
📁 Wie lassen sich Dateien und Ordner verwalten?
🔐 Welche Möglichkeiten gibt es bei Freigaben und Berechtigungen?
🤝 Wie können Inhalte mit anderen geteilt werden?

Natürlich bleibt auch diesmal genügend Raum für Fragen rund um Hubzilla – ganz gleich, ob ihr gerade erst neugierig geworden seid, Hubzilla bereits nutzt oder selbst einen Hub administriert.

Gerade die Mischung aus Einsteigern, erfahrenen Nutzerinnen und Nutzern sowie Administratoren macht die Workshops interessant. Niemand weiß alles über Hubzilla – aber gemeinsam kommt erstaunlich viel Wissen zusammen. 😊

I've started to add my own Angie [Nginx spoon] rules to implement my own short links. This approach allows #selfhosting people to use any of their own websites as a link shortener.

This should at least reduce the issues that you've mentioned. Another advantage of this approach is that wildcards and even regular expressions are supported.

Here's an example of an #Nginx or #Angie link shorten rule. This goes before the first existing location block for a given server.

The days of asking AI a question, or pasting a config file in, and then pasting (or typing) the updated file back, are no longer needed. I have over 47 running docker containers, with almost as many stopped, and when I want to create a new docker stack I’m never sure if there will be a port clash. Now I can just ask an agentic AI to check all my stopped and running containers and fix any port clashes, restart containers, diagnose why something is not working, check reverse proxy arrangements, etc.

Agentic AI is a term often heard, but in simple English, it is AI that actually does stuff, not just answer questions. Sometimes there is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server to install, or a connector, or a plugin. Those mechanisms give selected access to the AI to actually do tasks like reading and updating a config file itself, check log files and advise on corrective actions (or even do those actions), etc.

A chatbot AI answers questions, but an Agentic AI is a combination of AI with carefully selected tools installed, and permissions that must be granted by the user.

In my earlier example with Docker Portainer, I put some code into Claude’s config to connect to my Portainer instance on the LAN directly. In this way it can read all my existing container configs and learn what style I’m already using, and create something that really fits my environment with its unique volume mappings, etc. I also gave it directory access to my Conky config files (and the scripts folder for that) so that it can tweak any changes I require.

I have also installed the n8n connector which has taken my breath away. The n8n service is workflow automation tool (for example I use a n8n workflow for checking my blog RSS feed, and then automatically pushing my posts out to the various social media accounts I post at). That is usually a lot of back and forth as I have to fix small issues. Now Claude uses the n8n connector and literally creates a n8n workflow from scratch for me. Yesterday it created a workflow to search my Nextcloud Notes content, retrieve it, update it, add new notes. It tested and figured out what did not work, and applied the fixes all by itself (with me just reviewing and clicking apply for the various write actions).

So many possibilities open up, but there are some safeguards worth keeping in mind:

• Most such connectors have permissions that default to ask first. You can go a step further by granting always read permission, and keeping ask before writing, or if you are really living on the edge then permission granted for read/write/delete/overwrite automatically (and only for trusted tools).
• I have told Claude to remember to always back up any config file that it is going to write to or edit, but more importantly I have my own automated and independent backups that I can restore myself if I have to.
• Filesystem connectors require you to add specific paths first. Do not add the root folder, but stick to just specified folders you want help on.
• The Portainer access for example cannot access the .env files where typically passwords and API keys are stored (in Claude’s case for this connector so you may want to check on what you use for this).
• The cloud side cannot reach inside your network or desktop without a locally-running connector. So when you want the AI to reach your LAN, filesystem, Docker socket, localhost services, etc you need to install an appropriate local connector/bridge service.
• Ask to review differences before applying changes.
• Don’t give an AI access to secrets merely because a tool happens to be capable of reading them. You can often put secrets into a file elsewhere, where your scripts can put them in themselves, but AI has no access to read that folder.

But start small and just give it access to one useful thing. This lets you see what it can do, and then you can decide whether you want to give it more. Even a few small automated tasks end up saving a lot of time down the road.

And yes, some AI tools are better than others at some tasks. So when I asked Gemini which would be best for my types of tweaking and configs that I do in my home lab, it recommended Claude without hesitation. Chat is still also very useful for asking questions about setting up your Agentic AI capabilities, and what safeguards you should apply.

I decided to also start paying for AI now as it is performing a truly useful function, and saving me money not only in time now, but also to better utilise the free self-hosting services that I have. I have already saved more than $20 per month on other subscription services (see my video about what Wallos did for me — youtube.com/watch?v=_9F4szRS6m…).

It is not to say AI is perfect (it still needs human supervision) but it is undoubtedly a super tool to help make humans more productive themselves. For the same reason humans needed to master the use of the wheel, levers, early cars, telephones, and Internet search engines, if we don’t do the same with AI, we could lose our jobs to other humans who do use AI effectively as a tool. Cars and telephones never directly threatened jobs at all, in fact they created many new types of jobs, but those who harnessed those technologies gained leverage over those who just ignored them. Whether we like it or not, the world has moved on to another level. The great advantage we have with this new tool is, we can even ask it how we can use it better and more safely (just check its answer elsewhere too!).

The more worrying side we will need to solve, is how AI is being weaponised for hacking attacks, and even more dangerous, for creation of convincing AI-generated misinformation that can destabilise whole countries. This is something we need to solve, because cars, phones, the Internet, etc are also all used for bad purposes too, but they don’t just get cancelled.

Da sich unser tolles Werkzeug #UptimeKuma ja so *hervorragend* designen lässt (Ja! Das war dezente Kritik. Dennoch: Danke für dieses tolle Stück Software! ;) - musste ich für die Optik mit der API ran.

Für zwei von drei Welten gibt es nun kleine eigene Statusseiten die zwar schon bestanden und auch weiterhin bleiben, aber eben im eigenem Kuma-Design.

Zeit für #immich Hab bereits seit Monaten bei mir alles umgestellt... Nun Multi User Platform 😁

Früher: Googlen wie das geht - über web Interface Durchquälerei - Frust vorprogrammiert

Heute: eine Nachricht an mein #hermes KI Agent - der macht alles über immich API - Sendet mir ne txt mit allen nötigen Infos - Sohn richtet es ein - 5 Minuten läuft sein Backup

Und ich "weiß" wie das umgesetzt ist:

Technische Umsetzung der Trennung:

Immich isoliert jeden Benutzer sowohl in der Datenbank als auch im Dateisystem komplett:

- Dateisystem: Jeder User bekommt ein eigenes Verzeichnis nach seiner UUID. Jakobs Daten liegen unter `/mnt/immich-data/upload/upload/a5a86a77-.../`, deine unter `/mnt/immich-data/upload/upload/6f5b4988-.../`. Das gilt für alle drei Storage-Typen: Original-Uploads, Thumbnails und encoded Videos. Keine Überschneidung möglich.

- Datenbank: Jeder Asset-Eintrag hat einen `ownerId` Foreign Key auf den User. Immich filtert bei jeder Abfrage nach dem eingeloggten User — Jakob sieht nur seine eigenen Fotos, du nur deine.

- Backup: Das Borg-Backup sichert `/mnt/immich-data` komplett, also beide User-Bereiche.

Aktuelle Verteilung:
- Lars: 33.364 Assets, ~254 GB
- Jakob: 8 Assets, ~1,7 GB
- Disk: 332 GB von 697 GB belegt (48%)

Alles sauber getrennt. Jakob hat seinen eigenen Bereich, kann deine Fotos nicht sehen und umgekehrt. Falls du später teilen wollt, kann Immich das über **Shared Albums** — aber das müsstet ihr aktiv anlegen.

Das kleine Tool hält auf zwei unabhängigen Proxmox Mail Gateways die persönlichen Welcome-/Blocklisten aus den Quarantäne-Digests synchron. So wirkt die Entscheidung eines Empfängers unabhängig davon, über welchen gleichpriorisierten MX die nächste Mail ankommt.

Der Ansatz ist bewusst restriktiv:

- Peer-Daten nur lesend über die PMG-API mit Auditor-Rolle
- Änderungen ausschließlich lokal über pmgsh

Viel Reibung in den Abläufen - unstrukturierte Arbeitsweisen(letztes Protkoll von Sitzung liegt in WhatsApp)

4. Schritt - Homepage gebaut
5. Schritt - mit #syncthing / #filebrowser eine einfachen gemeinsamen Storage angelegt
6. Schritt - hermes mit cronjobs zur selbstverwaltung eingestellt (update / watchdog)
7. Schritt - aus meinem Datenmüll aus verschiedenen Dateien eine neue parallel Workflow basierte Ordnerstruktur aufgebaut (na klar mit hermes) - kann man auch noch als WebApp weiter spinnen

Gerade gesehen: in der Immich App kann man die öffentliche URL seines Servers eintragen und (!) die private IP Adresse. Im heimischen WLAN wird die genutzt, unterwegs die URL. Super. 👍

Bei #PeerTube ist viel Bewegung: Es sind viele Features dazu gekommen, z.B. wurden Verwaltung und Video-Editor und -Player stark verbessert.

Was aber auch auffällt: Es werden aktuell auffällig viele Schwachstellen geschlossen. Erst heute ist Version 8.2.4 erschienen und schließt mehrere Lücken mittleren bis hohen Schweregrads.
